What is documentary family photography?

Here are some pretty great things about this style.

It captures unique versions of your kids.

This documentary approach is a fun way to look back on favourite books your kids loved reading or the outfit that you had to peel it off of them and wash it.

But more importantly, it preserves their unique personality, traits, mannerisms and interests things that will evolve as they grow.

It captures a version of you.

Looking back on these moments lets you see how you’ve navigated the ups and downs of parenting, and how much you’ve grown. It’s an opportunity to recognize the love you give and receive, something that’s often hard to see in the midst of daily life.

You can take your time.

Sessions are a minimum of 2 hours to allow time for everyone to settle in and embrace the flow of daily life. There’s no rush to cram in activities or stress over perfect shots. We take our time, and the natural moments will unfold, making for authentic, exciting photos.

Your kids can misbehave.

I don’t expect kids to “behave” during the session. If things get chaotic or mischievous, that’s completely fine. Those moments—the crocodile tears, the laughter, the surprises—are all part of your real life, and I’m here to capture them without judgment.

So what does a documentary session with me look like?

NO POSING OR DIRECTING

While not a complete fly on the wall, I blend into the background for most of the session, allowing your family to interact naturally and comfortably.

IN HOME (OR FURTHER AFIELD)

I’m happy to travel to a special location for your family, but I’ve found that most families & children are more relaxed in the comfort of their own home. It’s a safe, familiar space and a great way to include family pets too!

NO NEED FOR A STRICT SCHEDULE

We’ll discuss potential activities before the session, but it’s okay if things don’t go as planned. I understand moods shift and life is unpredictable—that’s part of the beauty of documenting real family moments.

NO PRESSURE TO:

Coordinate outfits: No need to match outfits unless it’s part of your usual routine—then feel free to coordinate!

Clean the house: It’s not necessary to tidy up everything. It can be fun to capture what your kids are into at this stage, like toys or books. But if a spotless home is your everyday standard, go ahead and clean up!

“You are very accommodating, gentle, flexible. I didn’t feel you had any expectations from us.
